Top RTS Games: I always loved playing strategy games. Ever since I played Age of Empires for the first time back in 1997, I simply could not get enough of real-time strategy games. Needless to say, when it comes to building empires and commanding an army, I’m all over it. So, now that 2018 is coming to an end, I decided to round up the best real time strategy games that can be played on a mobile device, so you can take the action with you wherever you go. After doing some research on the web, I found a site called AppGrooves that listed the top 10 empire games for mobile devices.
Top Real-Time Strategy Games in 2020
While I instantly recognized some of the games on the list, I also found some other ones that I simply had to try out. After spending time with some of the games, I rounded up my top 3 favorites and reviewed them.
Forge of Empires – Rating: 4.4, Downloads: 10M+
My first pick is Forge of Empires. I was particularly impressed with how many different strategies you can use to advance your empire. From conquering armies using brute force alone, to using negotiation skills to advance your empire, you can truly carve your own path to world domination. I liked that you start with a stone age village and that you can work your way up developing technologies to become a high-tech metropolis. I also loved that you can actually run into famous people like Gandhi and Marylin Monroe while you are playing through the ages! Overall, I found the game progression to be well balanced, providing a highly rewarding experience when you advance to higher levels.
I did find that the game gets a bit more challenging as you reach higher levels. The technological advancements take a bit more time to develop the higher the level you are, so you will have to hold your empire’s ground a bit longer before you reach the next level. On the plus side, I found that by teaming up with other players, you get extra benefits which helps you grow much faster. So, I would recommend that you team up from the very start!
Pros: Multiple strategies, famous people cameos, from a stone-age empire to high-tech metropolis
Cons: Higher levels take more time to reach
Overall: Advance your empire to become a high-tech metropolis using your own unique strategy, but keep in mind that it will take longer to reach higher levels as you progress through the game.
Clash of Clans – Rating: 4.6, Downloads: 500M+
My second pick is Clash of Clans. I found it to be a great choice if you want to test your strategy skills against other players from across the world. You can build your own empire from the ground up and battle one on one against other players, or you can join a clan and fight other clans too! I also liked that you can play a campaign mode where you expand your empire across the realm on your way to defeat the Goblin King. I also liked that not only can you fight using weapons, but you can also use spells or fight with a unique selection of Heroes.
While I love the online multiplayer aspect of the game, I have found that matchmaking can sometimes be a little off with low levels of players being unfairly matched to higher level players. However, it doesn’t happen too often, and in the end, it comes down to strategy. You can also restart a game to be matched with another player that is closer to your level.
Pros: Diverse online multiplayer battle modes, create or join clans, campaign mode
Cons: Matchmaking issues
Overall: Great for testing your strategy skills against other players online, although you might be unevenly matched against higher level players every now and then.
Dawn of Titans – Rating: 4.5, Downloads: 5M+
My third pick is Dawn of Titans. I was particularly impressed with the high-quality video game graphics. You can easily tell that the developers put a lot of attention to the design and details, as I haven’t seen any other game on a phone with such beautiful and stunning graphics. Like Clash of Titans, you have the option to play solo in a campaign mode, or you can play online against other players too. I particularly like that you can customize titan warriors with powerful weapons and gear to lead epic battles and decimate your opponents.
I found that the game can take a bit of time to load. However, it can only be expected considering you are getting console level graphics right on your phone. In any case, I also noticed that the developers and continually upgrading the game, so stay current on game updates to get the best experience possible.
Pros: Stunning graphics, campaign, and multiplayer mode, customizable titans
Cons: Slow loading time
Overall: Great RTS game for epic titan battles with stunning graphics, but there is a bit of loading time when you start the game
These are my top 3 picks for best real-time strategy games of 2018. If you can’t wait to start building your own empire, then I’m sure you will love any of these games! Although I had a great time playing all of them, I can say that my personal favorite is Clash of Clans. What about you? I’d love to hear what your favorite empire game is. Let me know in the comments!
